The other day whilst at a church coffee morning (they have the BEST coffee) a lady asked me if the milk in This Baby's bottle was my own. Aside from being a pretty odd question, I wasn't sure what answer she wanted me to give her...
I was truthful and said that no, it was Hipp Organic formula, I had breastfed both my girls until a month old, but found it extremely difficult and made the decision to switch.
"Good" she said "it's all very well breastfeeding, but I can't abide women doing it in public" I wasn't sure what to say really, I don't agree, but I didnt want to cause offence. in the end I elected to go with "Erm, ok" in reply... "I mean SEX is natural isn't it?" she continued "but I don't see the need to do THAT in the middle of an AGM"
This lady is the same age as my Mum. I mean, what am I meant to do with my face when someone says a thing like that? I didn't think I was a prude, but I clearly am, YOU said sex and now I am embarrassed and you look like that's hysterical because that's exactly what you intended. Curse you clever granny and your sneaky saucy conversation. This isn't about breastfeeding at all is it? You just wanted to sneak the word sex into conversation and freak me out didn't you? YOU ARE COMPLETELY BONKERS! Just so you know....
This Baby's "I don't care where it's from, just gimme the milk" face. She was so small! |
Ha ha ha, I still have to look away and try not to blush when an even remotely saucy scene appears on TV and I'm in the company of my mum or dad! I wonder how many "youngsters" that old gal tries to trick with that conversation...?

As a yoof I used to get hideously embarrassed if anyone swore on the telly if I was sat with my parents. Like they've never heard a naughty swear before, ha!
DeleteOh cute is she! stopping by from Mostly Happenstance.
ReplyDeleteHi Kimberly, thank you! And thank you for stopping by too! :)
DeleteHa, what a nutty lady! Weird enough to be demanding to know the contents of the bottle, but to then mention sex and the AGM in the same breath...v odd! (And don't even get me started on the comparison of the necessity of breastfeeding vs sex!)
ReplyDeleteAnd look at baby looking all teeny, awww!x
It's just weird isn't it? I'm not sure she even thought the strange things she was saying, I suspect she was just trying to get me to bite. Because saying that feeding your child is comparable to publicly bonking in a meeting is going to get most people to snap I think. Crazy old duffer!
DeleteLongest I lasted with breastfeeding was 8 weeks, I just couldn't cope anymore. The pain just got a bit too much for me each time and as supportive my other half was I just had to switch. I felt really guilty though for doing so as if I was a bad mum for not lasting longer or for managing it properly.
ReplyDeleteOddly it never hurt while there was a midwife or in the hospital. They must have magic bubbles around them

I felt exactly the same. And yet when you say it, I want to say "but you shouldn't feel like that" though I wouldn't listen to anyone who said that to me! As a Mum you do the absolute best you can for your children, but there does come a point where you have to think of yourself I think. A miserable mother that's driven herself insane trying to stick out Breastfeeding because she feels like she should doesn't benefit a newborn does it? Funny, at the time I made my decision to switch I couldn't see the bigger picture in the slightest. Hormones I suppose, sneaky buggers....
