We have a problem.  We:

need to move from this:

To (eventually) something a little more like this:

We've tried this and this and this and this....

Only someone:
is having none of it....

We've had the most success with this:

But when I say success I'm applying the term loosely to say the least.  Generally I end up looking like this:

Yep, cross and wet and over exposed.

So....can anyone tell me how I'm meant to get that pesky baby away from her beloved bottle? And tips or suggestions on a good transition bottle/cup? I'm struggling!

  1. She is so beautiful, love the first photo of the two of you, gave me a a right giggle!

My daughter uses her cup for juice and bottle for nap & bedtime when she gets her milk. Like with yours she was very very fussy on which cup she would drink out of.. luckily on the fifth cup i've found one she likes (although she'd prefer to drink out of whatever glass I have but I can't trust her with that!) unfortunately they've discountinued it in Tesco so now she's stuck with a grotty cup and she won't use anything else!

My health visitor just told me it's perseverance and to only give her the cup during meal times and she gets nothing else.. personally I think that's cruel but after a day it worked (either that or she gave up haha)

Good luck with it, it's so trying when they don't understand why they can't have their bottle anymore!

    1. The fifth cup! That made me chuckle too, so we all go through the excessive cup buying thing then? I think your right, perseverance may well be the key. The health visitors comments are interesting. Thank you Amy, a very helpful comment xx

  2. I tend to agree with Amy Marie (which rhymes & is therefore an awesome phrase). When my littles were little & we switched to cups, we just switched to cups & that's what they got. When they were thirsty, they drank out of them. If they didn't want to drink out of them, I assumed they weren't thirsty lol. If they asked for the bottle I gave them the cup & if they threw a fit I handled it like any other tantrum {i.e. letting them get it out of their system while not caving in to their toddler terrorism lol}. Just low key, no big deal, no more bottles. It worked for me just fine!

    1. We have similar views on letting them get it out their systems and not crumbling! And I think you're right, if she's thirsty she'll drink out of whatever there is! I'll have her fizzling yet! ;)

  3. I used the same "nubby" one as you, and also some really cheap sippy beakers from Sainsburys. My daughter really liked her bottle, so wasn't keen on the sippy cup idea, but over the course of time she made the transfer by me gradually swapping bottle feeds for sippy cups. I also found as she ate more solids she became more accepting of the sippy cups. xx

    1. Mine is just the same, she adores her bottle. She'll almost tolerate a cup, but certainly not for milk! If I could get her to have milk in her cup for one feed every day I'd be a happy girl! I'll persevere!

  4. It has been so long since my "babies" have been on bottles or cups!
I nursed all 3 of my children until they were about 15 months old.
    Yes, I know...crazy!
My son (the youngest) did use a bottle at night before bedtime and a sippy cup during the day.
    But he nursed also.
The nursing transition was just as hard...they would pull at my boobies and try to lift up my shirt!
Eventually I just kept saying NO and give them the cup and they got the idea.
    It is hard, persistence!
    Good luck my friend.

    1. I think that's marvellous Kym! I would love to have been able to feed my little ones for so long! I managed three weeks and was very disappointed with myself. I not sure I would have cared for the booby pulling though!!!

I think perhaps I'll try and phase in one cup a day in place of her bottle. With no alternatives. Hard ball Mummy!!

  5. Haha, I'm so sorry but this made me laugh so much!!! I just had to leave a comment! I can't unfortunately offer any advice at this stage as I'm quite a way off of this {thankfully - going by your post!}. Best of luck.

  6. Oh she is so cute! This is a fab post lovely and it made me smile a lot!! Not sure what advice to offer other than my boy had bottle until he was two (only morning and evening) but he liked a cup and straw?! Can you try to gradually reduce bottle in the day at all? Good luck with it xx

  7. Oooooh a straw!!!! Hadn't thought if that.....I shall give that a go! Glad to hear your little chap had his bottle until a good age, makes me feel less pressured. She has three bottles a day now and my next goal is to persuade her to have her lunch time milk from a cup of some sort. I think I'm going to have to be the boss with this issue!! :)

  8. I'm pretty rubbish and my son at 4 has only just stopped having a bottle at bedtime. Most of the time now he has a mug now which he drinks in bed. But sometimes if I'm out of his small mugs he has a bottle again and gets all excited about being able to drink his milk while lying down! lol. Lala, my 2 year old still has a bottle. She drinks out of sippy cup some of the time and occassionally a cup with a straw but she'll often prefer a bottle particularly if she's tired.

    1. It's hard to get them to stop when they're attached isn't it? Her sister had moved into cups by none months. This one is nearly ten and a million times more reluctant!!!

  11. My youngest hated sippy cups, she drank best from the nuby one like yours. Then I bought one with a pop up straw. Tomme Tippee I think, it's called a pop up cup, she loves it and is now brilliant at drinking from a straw. I can even get her to try an open cup now and she'll drink from a little plastic shot type glass. We went through a multitude of cups too!

    1. I hadn't realised how many cups of acquired until I got them all out to photograph, it's quite embarrassing! I'm going to try the straw cup, I'm a fan of Tommee Tippee anyway, but it just might be what she needs. I figure she's guaranteed to use it when she's older even if she rejects it now. Keep your fingers crossed!

  12. Kate, we have used all the same beakers as you! Joshua will drink from any cup through the day but at night for his couple of ozs of milk before bed he wont relinquish the damn bottle!!
